African Diaspora Mathematicians Program (ADMP) Projects

Projects implemented from 2017 to 2019

Following the recent call for expressions of interest, the Commission for Developing Countries (CDC), through the ADMP Committee, received 9 applications. After extensive evaluation, the following three projects were selected for implementation from 2017 to 2019.

1.) Collaboration between Temple University, USA and Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia

This collaboration was led by the African Diaspora mathematician, Professor Shiferaw Berhanu (see picture to the right) of the Department of Mathematics, Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. He visited the Department of Mathematics at Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in activities which included the following, among others:

  • Teaching doctoral students intensive courses on complex analysis during the first summer and partial differential equations in the second summer
  • Contribution to the graduate program in the development and updating of course curriculum
  • Preparation and grading of Ph.D. qualifying exams in analysis
  • Supervision of graduate students
  • Talks to general audiences on the importance of mathematical education and research

Professor Berhanu's research involved, among other areas, investigation of the properties of solutions of systems of first order partial differential equations with complex-valued coefficients.

2.) Collaboration between Lehigh University, Bethlehem, USA and University of Buea, Cameroon

Professor Miranda Teboh-EwungkemThis collaboration was led by the African Diaspora mathematician, Professor Miranda Teboh-Ewungkem (see picture to the right) of the Department of Mathematics at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, USA. She visited the Department of Mathematics, University of Buea, Cameroon, to participate in activities which included the following, among others:

  • Postgraduate supervision of PhD and Masters Students
  • Initiating research collaboration
  • Mentoring of young staff members and postgraduate students
  • Advising on acquisition of software, literature and other educational materials
  • Strengthening the formal link between the host university and the African Diaspora's home university or other universities
  • Giving a lecture for two weeks at AIMS Cameroon

Professor Teboh-Ewungkem's research involved, among other areas, the development of mathematical models of infectious diseases both within and between hosts. She developed and analyzed mathematical models of the disease transmission process, the agents that cause the disease, as well as the agents responsible for the transmission of the disease.

3.) Collaboration between University of Sussex, United Kingdom and University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe

Professor Anotida MadzvamuseThis collaboration was led by the African Diaspora mathematician, Professor Anotida Madzvamuse (see picture to the right) of the Department of Mathematics at University of Sussex, Brighton, United Kingdom. He visited University of Zimbabwe to participate in activities which included the following, among others:

  • Postgraduate teaching, examinations and supervision
  • Curriculum development and improvement
  • Initiation of proof-of-concept research projects with the aim of producing rapid publications
  • Mentorship of young staff members and postgraduate students
  • Advice on acquisition of software, literature, and other educational materials
  • Exploring formal links between the University of Zimbabwe, University of Sussex, Southern African Mathematical Sciences Association (SAMSA) and the Masamu Program and many others

Professor Madzvamuse's research involved, among other areas, the development of new mathematical and computational models for 3D cell migration, new inverse problems with applications to biology and new optimal control models for parameter and function identification, as well as development of innovative commercial software packages for particle and whole cell tracking.
