Heidelberg, Germany during September 23-28, 2018.

AMINSE 2017 - The Third International Conference held at the Tbilisi State University, Georgia, December 6-9, 2017

“The Third International Conference on Applications of Mathematics and Informatics in Natural Sciences and Engineering” was held at Ilia Vekua Institute of Applied Mathematics (VIAM) of I. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). The aim of AMINSE 2017 is to bring together scientists to discuss their research results in all aspects of Mathematics, Informatics, and their Applications in Natural Sciences and Engineering. The conference was dedicated the 80th Birthday of Professor David Gordeziani (1937-2015). He was a director of the institute from 1986 to 2006. For the report click here. 7th East Asian Conference on Algebraic Topology (EACAT), India, December 1-6. 2017

The East Asian Conference on Algebraic Topology (EACAT) is a biannual conference on the broad area of Algebraic Topology. The seventh conference of this series was held at IISER Mohali, India, during December 01-06, 2017. The conference was organised jointly by IISER Mohali and IIT Ropar. There were a total of 33 talks on various aspects of Algebraic Topology by experts from 07 countries. A proceedings of EACAT consisting of contributed articles by some speakers and some well-known topologists from the region is under preparation and will be published by Springer. We gratefully acknowledge support from the CDC of IMU. The conference was partially supported by the Abel Board.

CIMPA Research School in Complex Geometry and Applications, Senegal, November 20th - December 2nd, 2017

The scientific topics discussed during this research school approved by CIMPA were Complex Geometry and their Applications. The objective was an introduction to recent developments in complex multi-variable geometry (with analytical concepts such as positivity, currents, pluri-sub-harmonicity and operators of Lelong-Poincaré and Monge-Ampère, etc.) in various directions: the holomorphic dynamics into several complex variables, the deformation of complex geometrical structures into "tropical" structures, the toric geometry and its relation to the real convex geometry, and finally the transposition to the real framework of concepts until then inherent in the complex framework (pluri-sub-harmonicity, operator of Monge-Ampere, positive currents, Lelong-Poincaré or Monge-Ampère equations); the questions of diophantine geometry (heights of schemes or arithmetic cycles, theory of the arithmetic intersection or Arakelov, the theory of pluri-potential in the framework non-Archimedean) were also be mentioned.

2017 AMMSI-PHILLIP GRIFFITHS PRIZE WINNER

 

Since 2016, the AMMSI-Phillip Griffiths Prize is awarded annually to an African mathematician, living in Africa, who has made outstanding contribution to mathematics, application of mathematics or promotion of mathematics, as evidenced by research and impact of the work. In 2017, the AMMSI-Phillip Griffiths Prize has been awarded to Professor Philibert Nang.

Professor Nang is an internationally recognized scholar based in Gabon, where he plays an important role for the local mathematical community. He is a specialist in Algebraic Analysis, a field incorporating several important branches of mathematics like Partial Differential Equations, Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Singularity Theory. The continuing focus of his research, theory of D-modules, is a vast extension of the concept of flat connection in differential and algebraic geometry. D stands for the ring of differential operators on a smooth space and D-modules are essentially systems of solution sets of differential equations, focusing on their extensions across singularities of the system and of the underlying space.

 

Early in his career he undertook the study of D-modules invariant under the action of an algebraic group. Among his main scientific contributions are important classification results for these so-called equivariant D-modules in terms of explicit algebraic invariants. For that body of work, Professor Nang was awarded the 2011 Ramanujan Prize for young mathematicians from developing countries. In more recent publications, he continues to contribute fundamental results to the field. He masterfully uses highly sophisticated tools like perverse sheaves, derived category or representation theory. His work thus impacts a wide range of areas of mathematics.

Professor Nang has also made notable contributions to mathematical development in his home country of Gabon. He is full professor and Head of the Research Laboratory of Mathematics, École Normale Supérieure of Libreville, as well as serving as President of the Mathematical Society of Gabon.

9th EMALCA, Bolivia, September 11-23, 2017

The "9na Escuela de Matemática de América Latina y el Caribe" in Bolivia took place at Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz, located at an elevation of about 11,811 feet above sea level. The aims of the school were to put young students in contact with relevant topics of current interest and to encourage the most outstanding to continue postgraduate studies.  Professors Wolfgang Kliemann (Iowa State Universtity), Rafael Labarca (Universidad de Santiago de Chile), Martin Sambarino (Universidad de la República de Uruguay) and  Daniel Juan Pineda (Universidad Nacional de México) gave two talks each one. Professors Milton Jara (Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada), Luz de Teresa (Universidad Autónoma de México), Mario Ponce (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and Adolfo Guillot (Universidad Autónoma de México) gave four courses of six sessions each. Nine students from Peru and thirty students from Bolivia, from whom ten were not from La Paz, participares of this two weeks undergraduate school.

CIMPA Research School Group Actions on Algebraic Varieties held at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru, Peru, September 4-15, 2017

This CIMPA school has been of great importance to the region, as it allowed fruitful interactions among many of professors and students from Latin-America working in Algebraic Geometry. Equally important is the fact that they had the chance to interact with well-known experts from France and Russia, crucial for networking and future joint projects. From the opinions collected from the participants and lecturers, it is safe to say that this CIMPA School was a success, for it open the way for future interaction between Latin-American researchers and their European counterparts, and it motivated students to start or continue working in Algebraic Geometry. Moreover, since this area of mathematics is at an initial stage in Peru, the CIMPA School has provided many research ideas and projects to be developed by potential undergraduate and graduate students.

International Conference on Class groups of Number Fields and Related Topics, India, September 4-9, 2017

The aim of this conference was to bring various experts on the subject at one place and provide young number theorists an opportunity to learn the techniques in the subject. This four day conference was begun with a keynote talk on September 04, 2017 and end with a valedictory function on September 07, 2017. There were 15 sessions consisting of one keynote, 6 plenary, 12 invited and 12 young scholar's talks. The details about this conference is available on the conference web page. The conference received very good feedback from speakers as well as participants, and as a request from experts a second version of will be organized and be held at the same place during October 08 -11, 2018.

Report on Topology Ecuador 2017 held at the University San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador, 14 - 18 August 2017

The conference Topology Ecuador provided a meeting point for over 60 topologists from Latin America, North America and around the world. The scope was broad, ranging from homotopy theory to noncommutative geometry, with the goal of establishing collaborations and boundary crossings both geographically and between areas of expertise. The conference created an inviting atmosphere for informal interactions going beyond sharing mathematical work. The talk “Diversity and Inclusivity in Mathematics” by Moira Chas initiated discussions about the mathematical community and raised awareness. Report on III. International Conference on Symmetries, Differential Equations and Applications (SDEA-III) was held at Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, 14-17 August 2017

The third SDEA was dedicated to Centenary of Noether's Theorem. This conference intended to concentrate on most of the recent advances in the applications of Lie groups including a wide area of topics in interdisciplinary studies in theoretical and applied sciences. The aim was to bring together academicians and researches from all over the World. The SDEA-III was a successful conference by providing a productive forum for academicians and students from not only Mathematics and Physics but also other branches such as Engineering and Social Sciences to discuss and share the latest developments in the theory and applications of Lie groups.

Selected papers of SDEA-III will appear in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS) and The Springer Proceedings Book Series.

SEAD-III is part of a series, with the SEAD-I held in Johannesburg, South Africa dedicated to the bicentenary of Evariste Galois in 2012 and SEAD-II held in İslamabad, Pakistan in 2014, dedicated to the 150 years of the presentation of James Clerk Maxwell on his Theory of Electromagnetism to the Royal Society.
